What to Do if Your Volume Button Is Not Working

Quite a few iPhone owners reported a problem with the volume buttons – when they tried to turn the volume up or down they've noticed that the iPhone volume buttons not working. It sounds like a hardware issue, but before you go to the Apple Store, there are a few things you should try because the bug in the software or dirt and dust on the volume buttons or in the charging port can cause the issue. Restart your iPhone

If you noticed the volume buttons on iPhone not working, the first thing to try is a simple restart. You know that every device may act oddly sometimes, and a restart can fix various issues. Press and hold the sleep/wake button. The slider will appear. Drag it to power off your iPhone. When the phone is off, press and hold the sleep/wake button to power it on.

Perform a soft reset

In most cases, a restart (shown above) will fix the problem and the iPhone volume buttons will start working again. If that does not happen, you may perform a soft reset. Don't worry, this will not erase any of your data.

  • Press and hold the sleep/wake button and the Home button at the same time
  • Keep holding these buttons until you see the Apple logo.

Press iPhone volume buttons

Press the volume buttons several times. Do you hear the clicking sound? If not, it may be because the buttons are stuck inside. You can try to keep on clicking it until your iPhone volume buttons go back to normal, or visit one of the Apple Stores so they can fix it.

Ring/silent button

This trick may help iPhone volume buttons to go back to normal. Try to toggle the ring/silent button and then press the volume buttons. For some users, this simple step solved the problem and the buttons started to work normally.

Earphone trick

If iPhone volume buttons are not working, there is another simple trick that may work. You will need Apple earphones with a remote that allows you to adjust the volume. Make sure you use the original one. Plug the earphone into the headphone jack, and try to raise or lower the volume using it. Do you see the volume bar? Assistive touch

This can be very useful. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility, and turn Assistive touch on. A small icon will show up on your screen.

Tap on it. Click on Device. Tap on volume up, and volume down several times. Close the dialog by pressing outside of it. Push the physical buttons – hopefully, they will work now.

Clean the volume buttons

If you notice dirt or dust around the volume buttons, remove it. iPhone volume buttons are pretty sensitive, and if they are dirty, they will respond slowly or won't respond at all. You can use a vacuum nozzle, and if the buttons are sticky, use a q-tip and rubbing alcohol.

Clean the charging port and the headphone jack

Many users who faced this problem were able to finally fix it by cleaning the charging port and the headphone jack. Just make sure to remove all the debris, dirt, and dust. Once you are done, try to turn the volume up or down using the physical buttons.

If the software on your iPhone is not up to date, make sure to download and install the latest iOS version.

  • Connect your iPhone to a power source or make sure your phone is charged, and connect to a Wi-Fi network
  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update
  • Tap Download and Install, or Install Now (if you already downloaded the latest software version)

  • Make sure your iPhone is charged

When an iPhone comes in touch with water, you need to turn it off right away, wipe the device using a cloth, towel, etc. and make sure to remove the water from the charging port, microphone, speakers, and volume buttons. Take out the SIM card and unplug the cables (headphones, for instance). Then you have to let your phone dry completely. When the phone is dry, you can turn it back on.
